How fair thee m’lady?
In advertising... not very! It is meant to be the fairest of all isn’t it? But when it comes to showing the difference and the love of unity amongst all of us, advertising seems to be harsh towards women of color. They need to be fair enough, light enough... lets face it, white enough to be considered any kind of amount of beautiful amongst their peers. We have seen pictures of an example in this video “Killing us Softly” where the hair dye product by Loreal used Beyoncé as their spokes model but even she isn't perfect enough. She was lightened to seem more beautiful and more approachable. But to who?... The Audience of white or to their peers of black? It subjectifies or should I say places value on what makes
one feel they’re not perfect because they may have darker skin. It leaves young girls wanting to be lighter skin. Possibly leading them to want to bleach their skin so they too can feel they are beautiful. It doesn’t embrace who or how they were made. It can cause isolation. It can also lead to depression. Not just within the black community but amongst all women who just don’t feel worthy enough. Some way there needs to be more images for everyone to feel accepted to show even through all our own imperfections we are beautiful. But, not here.. not now, how dare we all have a place of acceptance through the media. Beauty sells.
